How do I know if I have a STD?
Of the different STDs and infections some have symptoms and some do not. The best way to know is by getting tested.
Where do I get tested?
Crossroads Clinic provides confidential testing for some of the most common STDs.
STD and STI - what's the difference?
There are 8 pathogens linked to the highest transmission of Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). Of these 8 pathogens, 4 are currently curable: Syphilis, Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia and Trichomoniasis.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) on the other hand, are viral and at this time incurable. These include: Hepatitis B, Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV or Herpes), HIV, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). It’s important to note that treatment may be available for symptoms or disease due to these STIs, which can be minimized or altered to lessen their impact.
Can a STD affect my pregnancy?
If you undergo an abortion with an undiagnosed STD, like Chlamydia, you have a greater risk of developing PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease). PID can lead to serious consequences including infertility, ectopic pregnancy, abscess formation, and chronic pelvic pain. Since many women with STDs are asymptomatic and don’t realize they are infected, we recomend STD testing before undergoing an abortion. Make an appointment below for low-cost testing and treatment.
Am I at risk for a STD?
- According to recent statistics, half of Americans will contract a Sexually Transmitted Infection at some point in their life.
- Every year in the United States there are an estimated 19 million new infections.
- Nearly half of all new STD cases occur in people aged 15 to 24.
Testing for an STD
Be informed. Get Tested. Know for sure.
We test for Syphilis and HIV/AIDS from a blood draw. For Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, we offer testing from a urine sample plus free treatment. Make an appointment for STD testing and to learn more about reducing your risks of contracting a STD.
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is the most frequently reported bacterial STD in the United States. Any sexually active person can be infected with Chlamydia. The greater the number of sex partners, the greater the risk of infection. Because the cervix of teenage girls and young women is not fully matured, they are at particularly high risk for infection.
HIV
Human Immunodeficiency Virus infects cells of the immune system. Infection results in the progressive deterioration of the immune system, breaking down the body’s ability to fend off infections and diseases. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) refers to the most advanced stages of HIV infection. There are still over 1 million people living with HIV in the United States. About one-fourth of those affected by this STD have not yet been diagnosed and are unaware of their infection.
Gonorrhea
In women, symptoms of Gonorrhea are often mild, and most women who are infected have no symptoms. Even when a woman has symptoms, they can be mistaken for a bladder or vaginal infection. Untreated gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent health problems.
